7 Signs Your Main Sewer Line Is Clogged (and What to Do)
A slow sink is usually a local clog. When several drains act up at once, the problem is often in the main sewer line, the pipe that carries all of your home's wastewater out to the street. Catching a main line problem early can be the difference between a routine cleaning and a flooded basement.
7 Warning Signs of a Clogged Main Sewer Line
1. More than one drain is slow or backing up
If the kitchen sink, tub and toilet are all sluggish, the blockage is downstream of all of them, which points to the main line rather than a single fixture.
2. Water comes up in the tub or shower when you flush
Flushing pushes water down the line. If it can't get past a blockage, it rises at the lowest nearby opening, often the tub or shower drain.
3. Gurgling toilets and drains
Air trapped behind a partial clog escapes through fixture traps, causing gurgling or bubbling sounds after you run water.
4. Water at the basement floor drain
The basement floor drain is usually the lowest point in the system. Water pooling there after laundry or a shower is a classic main line warning.
5. Sewage odors inside or outside
A strong sewer smell can mean a blocked or damaged line, a dry trap or a cracked cleanout cap. Smoke testing can pinpoint the source.
6. Soggy or sunken patches in the yard
A broken or separated sewer pipe can leak into the soil above it, leaving wet spots, lush patches of grass or a dip over the sewer path.
7. Clogs that keep coming back
If a drain clears and then clogs again within weeks, something like grease buildup, tree roots or a sagging pipe is likely behind it.
What Usually Causes a Main Line Clog?
- Grease and soap buildup that hardens on the pipe wall.
- Tree roots entering through joints in older clay or cast iron pipe. See root removal.
- "Flushable" wipes and paper products that don't break down.
- Aging or damaged pipe: cracked clay, corroded cast iron or collapsed Orangeburg lines.
What to Do Right Now
- Stop running water in the house so you don't push more water into the backup.
- Skip chemical drain cleaners. They rarely reach a main line clog and can damage older pipes.
- Find your cleanout if you know where it is, but don't open it if sewage is backed up behind it.
- Call a drain and sewer professional. Sewage in a basement is an emergency.
How We Fix It
We start by finding the cause. For a one-time blockage, snake and auger cleaning restores flow. For grease, roots or repeat clogs, hydro-jetting scours the whole pipe wall. When a line keeps failing, a video camera inspection shows exactly what is happening inside, so you can decide between cleaning, spot repair or trenchless replacement.
