Hydro-Jetting vs. Snaking: Which Is Better for Your Sewer Line?
Snaking (a cable machine) is best for a single, recent blockage. It opens a path through the clog quickly. Hydro-jetting uses high-pressure water to scour grease, roots and scale off the entire pipe wall, so it's the better choice for lines that clog again and again, restaurant grease lines, and root problems.
What snaking does
Snake and auger cleaning feeds a rotating steel cable into the pipe. The cutting head breaks through the blockage and restores flow. It's fast, effective and the right first step for a sudden clog such as a toilet or sink line that stopped overnight.
The limit: a cable only cuts a hole through the clog. Grease and roots stay on the pipe walls, so the line can clog again within weeks.
What hydro-jetting does
Hydro-jetting sends water at very high pressure through a special nozzle. Rear-facing jets pull the hose forward while scouring the full circumference of the pipe, flushing grease, sludge, scale and root fibers down the line.
Side-by-side comparison
| Snaking | Hydro-jetting | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Single, recent clogs | Repeat clogs, grease, roots |
| Cleans whole pipe wall | No | Yes |
| How long results last | Shorter | Longer |
| Good for restaurants | Short-term fix | Yes, standard practice |
| Needs pipe check first | Rarely | Recommended for old or fragile pipe |
Is hydro-jetting safe for old pipes?
For most sound pipe, yes. For very old, cracked or collapsed pipe, a camera inspection first is the safe approach. Many older homes in Essex, Union and Bergen counties have clay or cast iron laterals, so we check before we jet when the line's condition is unknown.
Which one should you choose?
- One-time clog: start with snaking.
- Same drain clogs every few months: hydro-jetting, plus a camera look.
- Restaurant or commercial kitchen: hydro-jetting on a schedule. See commercial jetting.
- Tree roots: cutting plus jetting, then a plan from our root removal team.
Frequently asked questions
Is hydro-jetting better than snaking?
For repeat clogs, grease and roots, yes, because it cleans the whole pipe wall. For a single sudden clog, snaking is often all you need.
How often should a sewer line be hydro-jetted?
Homes with recurring root or grease problems often benefit from jetting every 12 to 24 months. Restaurants may need it every few months. A camera inspection helps set the right schedule.
Can hydro-jetting damage pipes?
On sound pipe, no. On badly cracked or collapsed pipe it can make damage worse, which is why a camera inspection is recommended first on old lines.
